SCHOLARSHIPS: SOME THOUGHTS AND SOME LINKS
Brutus in JULIUS CAESAR
by William Shakespeare
There is a tide in the affairs of men
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat,
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.
(IV.ii.269–276)
Through these words, Shakespeare suggests that opportunities come our way and we must be prepared to take them, rise with the tide and travel where life takes us or risk remaining marooned in the mundane (or worse). This decision is the measure of control we do have over fate or the hand of God—to realize an opportunity and to have
the courage to take it.
I love this quote for what it says about catching the current of fortune. You have already done so—most of you—or you would not be here at Machabeng. I have so much respect for your courage to pursue your dreams and that is why I am doing this.
Here’s to our pursuit of the currents…
I have no desire to deceive you; it is a grueling process! Some tips:
- Don’t expect miracles…although sometimes they happen.
- Do know that you need to be a top academic achiever. Sorry, but that's the reality.
- Read, read, read to become familiar with the process. I will do what I can to make this easier by doing some of the work, but it requires you to have…
- PERSEVERANCE and PATIENCE.
- Oh, and PICKINESS. You must follow every little rule to the letter.
- You have to meet the criteria as stipulated by the scholarship/grant providers.
- Scholarships are sparse for undergraduate students (but not nonexistent). More opportunities are available at the graduate and post-graduate level, so, even while you are doing your undergrad degree--even if you don't get an undergrad studies scholarship, don’t forget to keep looking for scholarship opportunities.
- AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT IS WORTH IT! Your work could earn you a LOT of money in scholarships.

Type of Scholarship: Full scholarships
Eligibility criteria:
- International students from outside of EU
- For Bachelors or Masters programs
- Must maintain 80% of credits
In what fields of study:
BUSINESS
Comments:
I know nothing about this institution, but this sounds interesting and worth further investigation if you are interested in Business/Economics, particularly with an international focus.
FOCUS OF THIS INSTITUTION, at the undergrad level, seems to be BUSINESS with a focus on international business.
Cost of living looks pretty high in Amsterdam, not that that should be a deterrent if this is a full scholarship, but it IS a consideration
Synopsis from website:
Study Economics and Business in Amsterdam
Increasing globalisation presents a need for graduates with a solid training and a broad range of skills, knowledge and international experience in all kinds of business organisations and (inter)national governmental bodies. Dutch universities with their international reputation and in particular the University of Amsterdam (UvA), fully respond to this need. It is a top UvA priority to serve as breeding grounds for creative learning, where students develop a way of thinking that is original, independent and academic.
Top 5 reasons to study here
The University of Amsterdam's 3-year undergraduate programme in Economics and Business
is very intensive and high-standard
- admits a limited number of selected students (approx. 75)
- emphasizes a quantitative approach
- has an international student body (>40 nationalities)
- is located in the midst of Amsterdam
- Amsterdam is the world's most multi-cultural city. Though it only has 750,000 inhabitants more nationalities are represented than in New York City (177).
Rankings and reputation
The University of Amsterdam (established 1632) has some 22,000 students. In the Times Higher University Ranking (2007) the university is ranked 48th in the world and 4th in continental Europe. In what fields of study: A fairly broad range.
How does U of C rank in Canadian Universities? Roughly one of the top 10-15
Comments:
I know this institution and it has a fairly good and growing reputation in Canada, especially since Alberta is growing economically and developing.
$20,000. Canadian should cover costs of tuition and living expenses, but does not automatically cover travel costs. Students would have to budget carefully. Cost of living in Alberta is fairly high.
